Puducherry Schools to Remain Closed on Dec 4 Due to Cyclone Michaung

All schools in Puducherry, Karaikal, and Yanam regions will remain shut on Monday, December 4 due to cyclone Michaung. As per official sources, the decision has been made as part of precautionary measures taken by the government, the news agency reported. Puducherry and the outlying regions have been experiencing heavy rainfall for the last few days although there was a lull in the monsoon today.

According to the MeT department, a low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a depression on Friday and is likely to become a cyclonic storm by Sunday, December 3. The cyclone is likely to affect Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh but is expected to have no impact on Odisha. As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the cyclonic storm will cross the coast between Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh and Chennai around December 4 evening.

Cyclone Michaung is the sixth cyclone in the Indian Ocean and the fourth in the Bay of Bengal this year. The weather department has issued an orange alert for north coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal with a forecast of extremely heavy rainfall on December 3 and heavy to very heavy rainfall on December 4. It has also issued a red alert for coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam on December 4 and 5. An orange alert has been issued for Odisha on December 5 with a forecast of heavy to very heavy rainfall.

Schools in Chennai remain closed on November 30 due to heavy rains. Educational institutions also remained shut in Thiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Ranipet, and Kanchipuram districts. Chennai University had postponed the varsity exams due to the heavy rain for the benefit of the students. IMD also issued an orange alert for Chennai and several other districts in Tamil Nadu for today and tomorrow.
