Earlier, England captain Jos Buttler had won the toss and he elected to bowl first. India were off to a shaky start as they lost Gill, and the pressure got to Virat Kohli, who narrowly missed a century in the previous game against New Zealand in Dharamsala.
Kohli played eight balls, and the ball before his eventual dismissal almost found its way to the boundary only to be stopped by excellent work in the outfield from Dawid Malan.
On the next ball, the former Indian captain walked out of the crease to hit the ball over Willey’s head but he failed to read the line correctly.

On the penultimate ball of the seventh over, the pressure of dot balls got to Virat, a short ball from Willey deceived Kohli as the ball caught the top half of the bat and went high towards mid-off where Stokes was stationed and the all-rounder took the catch with ease.
The dismissal saw India slump to 28/2, then Shreyas Iyer came out to bat and he too was dismissed by Woakes who got the better of Iyer with the short ball trick. Then, Indian captain Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul joined hands to steady the ship after a shaky start for the hosts.
