The archers on Wednesday morning helped India overtake their previous best tally of 70 medals in an Asian Games.

India surpassed their previous best Asian Games medals tally when the archers clinched the gold in compound mixed team event on Wednesday.

India have now won a total of 71 medals – 16 gold, 26 silver and 29 bronze.

Indian race walkers Manju Rani and Ram Baboo fetched a bronze medal in the 35km mixed race walk event early on Wednesday to help India match the 2018 Jakarta Games’ performance.

Compound archers Ojas Deotale and Jyothi Surekha Vennam then grabbed India’s 71st medal when they won the mixed team gold medal beating South Korea in the final.

“It is with great pleasure that I would like to state that India has forged its impression with the best ever medal haul in the Asian Games by crossing the 70 mark in medals tally and there are more to come,” India’s chef de mission Bhupender Singh Bajwa said.

India has sent its largest-ever contingent with an aim to cross the 100-medal mark at the continental showpiece.

‘Aab ki Baar, Sau Paar’ (which translates to crossing 100 medals this time) has been India’s catch line for the Hangzhou Games.

So far, India have pocketed 24 medals in athletics (4 gold, 10 silver, 10 bronze) followed by 22 in shooting (7 gold, 9 silver, 6 bronze).

On October 1, India won as many as 15 medals – their richest single-day haul in the ongoing Games so far.

In the medals tally, India are currently fourth.

At the time of publishing, China continued to lead the rankings with with 164 gold, 90 silver and 46 bronze for a combined tally of 300 followed by Japan at second (33 gold, 48 silver, 50 bronze) and South Korea at third (32 gold, 43 silver, 65 bronze).
