187 amendments led to trouble in RS: Chidambaram
Home Minister P Chidambaram said that the BJP had no intention of passing the Lokpal Bill in the Rajya Sabha.

New Delhi: Union Home Minister P Chidambaram on Friday said that the BJP had no intention of passing the Lokpal Bill in Rajya Sabha, that is why 187 opposition amendments were moved in the House.

"There are differences among UPA allies. I would not go so far as to say that there is a pattern in confrontational behaviour (of TMC). Quite clear that apart from regional parties, BJP wanted a weakened Bill," Chidambaram said.

"By no stretch of imagination 187 amendments could have been examined, analysed and accepted or rejected in the time available yesterday. How can a minister accept amendments being forced down his throat," he said.

The Home Minister said that the the Lokpal and Lokayukta Bill will be passed in Rajya Sabha in Budget session. "We will talk to parties. The Bill is still safe, not defeated in the Rajya Sabha. It will be taken up in the Budget session," he said.

"We reached out to other political parties to accommodate their concerns. Bill is still safe in Rajya Sabha, it has not been defeated. Had the bill been defeated it would have been worse. The Bill could be taken up in the next session," he said.

"It's a government prerogative to move a bill and prerogative to move Amendment Bill. We accepted crucial amendments in the Lok Sabha and the bill was passed. It does not lye in the mouth of BJP to say they support the bill. BJP succeeded in defeating Constitutional amendment but not Lokpal," he added.

Chidambaram said that those moved the amendment had no intention of passing the bill.

"Last amendment was received at 6 PM. 187 amendments were moved in the last day in the Upper House and it was expected that the government accept all of them. BJP had no intentional of passing the Bill," he said.
