The Nanvati Commission wants a probe into the circumstances under which 2002 riots documents were destr

New Delhi: Justice Nanavati Commission's latest order could prove to be a major embarrassment for Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi. The Nanvati Commission has ordered the Gujarat government to set up a committee which will investigate the circumstances under which documents related to the 2002 riots in the state were destroyed.

The Commission has also ordered that the Gujarat Home Secretary and the ADGP should be included in the committee. The Commission has ordered that the committee should file its report within one month. The order was passed by the Commission on a petition filed by IPS officer Sanjeev Bhatt before the Gujarat High Court in which he had requested the Nanavati Commission to direct the Gujarat government to provide all the documents related to the 2002 Gujarat riots. Significantly, several important documents related to the 2002 riots have been destroyed.

Sanjeev Bhatt had filed a plea before the Commission for getting the documents. After the Commission rejected his petition, he moved the High Court.Gujarat Additional DGP (Intelligence) had admitted in a reply sent on October 18, 2012 to the Nanavati Commission that many documents had been destroyed.

The High Court had directed the state government to show all riots related documents to Bhatt, but DGP (Intelligence) claimed that several documents had been destroyed. Out of the 47 documents sought, only 16 documents were presented.

After the Commission's order, the state government could be in trouble. An investigation can reveal the circumstances under which the documents were destroyed and whether it was done to eliminate the evidence.
