New Delhi: An Andhra Pradesh-based Maoist group claimed responsibility for the Narayanpur ambush on the CRPF personnel that left 27 jawans killed in Chattisgarh on Wednesday. The Maoist outfit said the attack was carried out to avenge Operation Greenhunt.

Security personnel on Wednesday scoured the jungles in Chhattishgarh's Narayanpur district in the hunt for the Naxals.

Around 15 rebels were also possibly killed when the CRPF personnel retaliated during the Maoist ambush in the forested stretch, said Chhattisgarh DGP Viswa Ranjan though their bodies are yet to be found. The Naxalites are known to take away bodies of their cadres killed in encounters with security forces.

Around 100 Naxals who struck with automatic rifles were involved in the "major ambush" and the gunbattle lasted for two to three hours, police said. The death toll rose to 27 after the body of a CRPF constable Neeraj Kumar who was missing was found by search parties on Wednesday.

The Centre has taken a serious note of the Naxal ambush and has asked the state government to work our redeployment of the forces in the Naxal-hit areas. However, Union Home Minister P Chidambaram ruled out any intelligence failure in Chattisgarh.

He was addressing mediapersons in the Capital after a high-level meeting convened by the prime minister to take stock of the situation in the Naxal-hit areas as well as Kashmir.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh, who convened an emergency meeting to take stock of the situation, has said the sacrifices of the security personnel will not go in vain.

"The security personnel have laid down their lives to free the people from Naxal terror. Their sacrifice will not go in vain," Singh said.

"The Naxals have carried out a cowardly act. People and groups having faith in human rights should condemn this act of murder in once voice," he said, vowing to end the Maoist menace in the state.
