BJP files privilege motion against PM
The BJP filed the motion against the PM for speaking outside the Parliament over the JPC probe demands.

New Delhi: The BJP filed a privilege motion against Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday for announcing outside the Parliament his decision to reject setting up of a JPC on the alleged phone-tapping issue. The motion, signed by more than 50 BJP MPs, has been submitted to the Secretary General of Lok Sabha P D T Achary.

Their action came close on the heels of Leader of the Opposition Sushma Swaraj objecting to the Prime Minister's announcement on the issue. "This is a disrespect to the House. The Prime Minister should give a statement in the House on the issue," she said in Lok Sabha.

She insisted this was a serious matter as phones of even Cabinet ministers were allegedly being tapped. BJP has also demanded a JPC into the IPL controversy. Senior BJP leader Anath Kumar said: "We have moved a notice of privilege against the Prime Minister because he denied the JPC probe into the IPL scam, that too outside the House."

Both Houses of the Parliament have been adjourned following uproar over the alleged phone tapping. While the Rajya Sabha will not witness any proceeding till Wednesday, Lok Sabha was adjourned till 2 pm.

Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj made an issue of the Prime Minister denying a joint parliamentary probe into the IPL scam. And also the fact that he spoke about it not inside the House but outside. A similar uproar over phone tapping led to the Rajya Sabha being adjourned.

A privileged motion is a motion in Parliamentary procedure that is granted precedence over ordinary business because it concerns matters of great importance or urgency. Such motions are not debatable, although in case of questions of privilege, the Chair may feel the need to elicit relevant facts from members.
