New Delhi: The members of the opposition parties on Wednesday questioned the government over Sri Sri Ravi Shankar's World Culture Festival, which is slated to be held from March 11-13 on the banks of river Yamuna in the national capital.
Protesting over the issue in the Rajya Sabha, Left leader Sitaram Yechury asked why the Indian Army was being used in the preparation for the event.
"Can Army be roped in for a private function?" asked the Left leader.
Joining the opposition protest was senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, who said that while his party members were not against Art of Living, there were concerns related to environment.
"The Environment Minister and Prime Minister went to the Climate summit recently but right in the national capital, such an event in taking place in the Yamuna floodplains," said Azad.
The government, however, backed the event, saying the organisers had taken all required permissions.
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley also intervened saying that the matter could not be raised in the House as it was already in a court.
Union Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar is also expected to speak on the issue of Sri Sri Ravi Shankar's World Culture Festival in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.
