New Delhi: The issue of troop reduction in the strife-torn state of Jammu and Kashmir has come up for discussion yet again.
Congress, on Monday rejected demands for reduction of troops in Jammu and Kashmir, saying withdrawing troops from internal security duty at present will be dangerous.
"A fear psychosis still prevails and threat perception has not come down," J&K Congress president Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.
Sayeed, who was addressing a party convention at Baramulla, 55 kms from Srinagar, referring to demands by coalition partner PDP for troop reduction said, ground situation in the state was "contradictory" to it.
“Many pockets in the state were under militancy threat and the entire political leadership were living under complete security cover. In such a scenario, the idea of troops withdrawal was not feasible,” he was quoted as saying.
The differences between the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and the Congress arose early this year following the demand by the former for gradual demilitarisation of Jammu and Kashmir.
The Congress has ruled out any withdrawal of troops from the state at this stage, while the PDP has been consistently demanding troop cut for some time now.
