New Delhi: The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has announced that it will support the government if a vote takes place on FDI in multi-brand retail. This comes even as the DMK has been against FDI. DMK chief Karunanidhi said the decision has been taken to save the government and keep communal forces at bay. "DMK took the decision with "bitterness" to prevent communal forces from coming to power," Karunanidhi said.

Meanwhile, the BJP remained firm on its demand for a discussion on FDI under rule 184 that entails voting. The Lok Sabha was adjourned twice again on Tuesday after an uproar over the issue.

The UPA coordination committee also met to discuss the provision of voting. Sources say the government is against having a vote, but if forced to do so, it is sure of the support of the Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party. Sources say allies like the RLD, NCP and the National Conference are with the government for a discussion without vote.
