Speaking to Rajdeep Sardesai, Arun Shourie also urged the government to 'not delay decision making by waiting for legislation'.

New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Arun Shourie on Monday said that he supported Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's decision to raise the fuel prices citing 'increasing growth deficit'.

Speaking to IBN18 Editor-in-Chief Rajdeep Sardesai, Shourie said, "I personally support the hike in the prices of petroleum products. It's only when prices of fuel are increased that alternate power sources will become viable."

However, Shourie blamed the Prime Minister for the increase in growth deficit saying, "The Prime Minister had all the powers. But he didn't act for eight years, due to which the deficit has gone up. The current situation is because of mismanagement, the Prime Minister presided over it."

Shourie also urged the government to 'not delay decision making by waiting for legislation'. "I would urge the government not to delay matters now. Do not wait for legislation, it is not going to come about. Postponing good economics is disastrous for the country," the BJP leader said.

Calling politics 'absurd' in the current situation, Shourie said, "Subsidy can't be reduced till everyone today comes together."

He concluded by saying he was hoping for more rapid reforms and decisions from the Prime Minister. "The Prime Minister has begun to deliver, he now has to run rapidly and take decisions," Shourie said.
