India heading in the right direction under PM Narendra Modi, says BS Yeddyurappa

Our Prime Minister Narendra Modi is completing one year in the august office of the Prime Minister in the next one week. It is a matter of great pride for all of us. For the first time in many years, we have a government which is totally scam free.

The Prime Minister has been running a clean, efficient and pro-people government. When he led the BJP to a historic victory in the summer of 2014, India was in shambles. The Congress-led UPA which had ruled the country for 10 years between 2004 and 2014 had destroyed nation’s economy. The public morale was so low.

Mr. Modi did not waste even a minute after he took charge. He started the work in right earnest. He had a blueprint ready for the overall development of India. Our government led by Narendra Modi has achieved a lot in just one year. I don’t want go into each and everything. I just want to list out a few major achievements here.

The Prime Minister Modi has put India’s foreign policy back on the track. When he took oath as the Prime Minister, he had invited all SAARC nation heads for the swearing in. It was a nice gesture on part of Modi. He sent out a strong message across that India values its neighbours the most. He also visited almost all SAARC countries in the very first year of his Premiership.

After that he visited the United States of America, Australia, China, Brazil, Germany, France, Canada and a few other nations. He has so far visited 14 nations to cement India’s relationship with rest of the World. The reception he gets, wherever he goes proves that the major powers in the world have acknowledged India’s importance in the world.

Several foreign heads of state have also visited India. Among them the US President Barack Obama and Chinese President Xi Jinping are very important.

Economic Policies

PM Modi’s economic policies have been good and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has presented two good budgets. The Railway budget has also been good. The Prime Minister’s Jan Dhan Yojana aimed at economic inclusion of the poorer class is one such example. His ‘Make in India’ is another great initiative. He has also sanctioned a lot of money for the development of rural India. The allocation for the MNREGA has been sufficient. His ambitious Ganga Cleaning programme is also one such major step. The PM’s recent insurance cover for all is also another important initiative.

He has reformed the decaying Planning Commission and renamed it as Niti Ayoga or Policy Commission. It is a welcome step. This reformed commission gives greater importance to states.

The ‘Swach Bharat’ or ‘Clean India’ campaign has been a radical idea. People must know that it is a national mission and everybody should contribute to the success of it. Government alone can’t do everything unless we have civic sense

The Modi led government has controlled the spiralling prices of all essential commodities. It has brought the inflation under control.

I have been with the BJP since 1967. It was known as Jan Sangh then. I am one of the founder members of the BJP and one of its first legislators. I also led the BJP to its first ever victory in a southern state – Karnataka in 2008. Narendra Modi had campaigned for the BJP during that election and I sincerely remember that.

The BJP’s victory in the 2014 Lok Sabha election is the proudest and the happiest moment for all of us. Modi is India’s strong Prime Minister and he is leading the country in the right direction.

In the remaining four years of this term, he is going to achieve many more new things. He has the vision and foresight. I wish him good luck.

(BS Yeddyurappa is national vice president of the BJP and a Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha). He has also been the chief minister of Karnataka)
