National Election Watch (NEW) and Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) have analysed the self-sworn affidavits of 1,292 candidates out of 1,295 candidates who are contesting in the Phase 7 of Lok Sabha 2014 elections.
The rest of the candidates were not analysed due to unclear/incomplete affidavits uploaded on the ECI website at the time of making of this report.
A total of 17 per cent of the candidates (222) have declared criminal cases against them. Among them 139 candidates (11 per cent) are facing serious criminal cases. 341 candidates (26 per cent) are Crorepatis and Rs.3.77 crore is the average asset of the candidates in the fray.
The seventh phase of Lok Sabha voting will take place on April 30. The newly created state of Telangana will vote for both the Assembly and Lok Sabha. Total 89 Lok Sabha seats and 119 Assembly seats in Telangana are voting on that day.
All 26 Lok Sabha seats in Gujarat are also voting on the same day. 65 candidates from Gujarat are facing criminal cases and 78 candidates are Crorepatis.
Candidates with Criminal Cases: Out of the 1292 candidates analysed, 222 (17 per cent) candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves.
Candidates with Serious Criminal Cases: 139 candidates have declared serious criminal cases including cases related to murder, attempt to murder, communal disharmony, electoral violations, crimes against women etc.
Candidates with most number of declared serious Criminal Cases: Rajesh Ranjan Urf Pappu Yadav of RJD from Madhepura constituency, Bihar has declared 24 criminal cases against himself followed by Vasava Kishorbhai Chhotubhai of JD(U) from Surat constituency, Gujarat with 17 criminal cases and Swami Sachchidanand Hari Sakshi of BJP from Unnao constituency, Uttar Pradesh with 8 criminal cases.
Candidates with cases related to murder: 4 candidates have declared cases related to murder.
Candidates with cases related to Attempt to Murder: 19 candidates have declared cases of attempt to murder.
Candidates with cases related to Communal Disharmony: 10 candidates have declared cases related to Promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc., and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony(IPC section-153A). 1 candidate has declared a case related to Deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings or any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs(IPC section-295A) and 2 candidates have declared cases related to Injuring or defiling place of worship with intent to insult the religion of any class(IPC section-295).
Candidates with cases related to Prevention of Corruption Act: 4 candidates have declared cases related to Prevention of Corruption Act.
Candidates with cases related to Electoral Violations: 7 candidates have declared cases related to electoral violations. 5 candidates have declared cases related to undue influence or personation at an election (IPC section-171F),3 candidates have declared cases related Illegal payments in connection with an election(IPC section-171H). A candidate may have declared more than one IPC related to electoral offences.
Candidates with cases related to Crimes against Women: 11 candidates have declared cases related to crimes against women.
Party wise Candidates with Criminal Cases: 27 (33 per cent) out of 81 candidates from INC, 24(35 per cent) out of 68 candidates from BJP, 7 (10 per cent) out of 68 candidates from AAP, 16 (19 per cent) out of 83 candidates fielded by BSP and 55 (11 per cent) out of 485 Independent candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.
Party wise Candidates with Serious Criminal Cases: 7 (9 per cent) out of 81 candidates from INC, 19 (28 per cent) out of 68 candidates from BJP, 4 (6 per cent) out of 68 candidates from AAP, 10 (12 per cent) out of 83 candidates fielded by BSP and 34 (7 per cent) out of 485 Independent candidates have declared serious criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.
Red Alert Constituencies- 42 constituencies have at least 3 candidates with declared criminal cases. Khagaria constituency, Bihar has the highest number of contesting candidates i.e. 7 with criminal cases against them.

Financial Background
Crorepati Candidates: Out of the 1292 candidates analysed, 341 (26 per cent) are crorepatis.
Party-wise Crorepati Candidates: 64 (79 per cent) out of 81 candidates in Congress, 51 (75 per cent) out of 68 candidates in BJP , 34 (50 per cent) out of 68 candidates in AAP,25 (30 per cent) out of 83 candidates in BSP and 50 (10 per cent) out of 485 Independent candidates have declared assets worth more than Rs 1 crore.
Party-wise Asset Rank: 60 (74 per cent) out of 81 INC candidates occupy the top three highest assets positions amongst all the contesting candidates in their respective constituencies. Similarly, 47 (69 per cent) out of 68 BJP candidates, 13 (16 per cent) out of 83 BSP candidates and 27 (40 per cent) out of 68 AAP candidatesoccupy the top three highest assets positions in their constituency.
Top three richest candidates
The TRS candidate from Chevella Lok Seat Dr. Konda Vishweshwara Reddy is the richest in the fray with assets worth Rs 528 crore. Nama Nageshwara Rao of the TDP from Khammam has declared assets worth Rs 338 crore. Dr G Vivekanand, Congress candidate from Peddapalle has declared assets worth Rs 266 crores.
Poorest candidates
Candidates with Zero Assets: 12 candidates have declared their total assets as zero.
Low Asset Candidates: A total of 83 candidates have declared assets less than Rs 50,000 (excluding candidates who have declared zero assets).
Income tax details & age
A total of 52 per cent candidates have not declared their Income Tax details and 48 per cent have declared it. 45 per cent candidates are graduates and above and 51 per cent are 12th standard and below. 61 per cent candidates are in the age group of 25-50 years, 35 per cent are in the age group of 51 to 70 and 3 per cent are above 71 years.
