New Delhi: The first sign of the Congress losing all influence over the government matters can be seen or noticed in today's newspapers across India. Today is the 23rd death anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, who was assassinated by the LTTE on May 21, 1991. Except a small advertisement issued by the Haryana Government, there are no other advertisements paying homage or hailing his martyrdom in newspapers or TV channels.
The flood of advertisements on the birth and death anniversary of Rajiv Gandhi had been a regular feature since the Congress returned to power in 2004. Almost all ministries and the Congress-held state governments used to spend crores on these advertisements every year.
The Indian Airlines, which always issued an advertisement on the birth and death anniversary of Rajiv Gandhi has not done it this time. Rajiv Gandhi was a pilot with them before he joined politics.
The Congress-led UPA government also spent the same amount on advertisements on the birth and death anniversary of Pandit Nehru and India Gandhi.
The public had questioned it on several occasions. According to a Right to Information (RTI) revelation, the Central government spent over Rs 22 crore in 2012 on these advertisements. Eminent modern historian Ramachandra Guha wrote columns criticizing these advertisements.
And it's not the UPA alone which is guilty. Even during the NDA regime, crores were spent on advertisements.
