New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party, which is yet to recover from the embarrassment caused by the induction and de-induction Sri Rame Sene chief Pramod Muthalik on last Sunday, has suffered one more jolt this weekend. Sabir Ali, who joined the BJP from JDU a day ago, has now been shown the door. It seems something goes wrong with the BJP every weekend.
Sabir Ali, a former Rajya Sabha member of the JDU had joined the BJP after Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar sacked him from the party last week. Ali's induction was met with stiff resistance from BJP's most familiar Muslim face and its national vice president Muqtar Abbas Naqvi.
Naqvi protested by tweeting that Sabir Ali was a friend of terror outfit Indian Mujahiddin (IM) leader Yasin Bhatkal. Naqvi's tweet and public outburst shocked and embarrassed the BJP.
The party was divided over the issue. Some argued that Ali was inducted into the BJP by its Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi and a few others without the consent of others. Modi's Muslim face in Gujarat, Zafar Sareshwala had defended the induction. However, Naqvi stood his ground saying that Ali has always been a vocal critic of the BJP and he was sympathizing with terror suspects.
Naqvi deleted his tweet claiming that he had mentioned Dawood Ibrahim's name in it. But, he refused to accept Ali's induction. Naqvi backers in the BJP argued that Ali's induction has spoiled the image of the BJP at the national level.
Ali backers countered them saying that Naqvi was scared of another Muslim face competing with him. The RSS which allegedly had played a major role in the induction of Pramod Muthalik also opposed Ali's induction.
Left with no other option, the BJP national president Rajnath Singh was forced to cancel Ali's membership.
