New Delhi: The Congress has cited ''anti-incumbency'' as the major factor that led to its loss in the Himachal Pradesh Assembly elections on Friday.
Congress lost power to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) winning just 23 seats in the 68-member Assembly. Continuing with its good show BJP won 41 seats with the Bahujan Samaj Party bagging one seat and three going to independent candidates.
Congress leader and Union Minister of State for External Affairs Anand Sharma said even though there was a huge investment exceeding Rs 30,000 crore and creation of 300,000 new jobs in the Himachal during his party’s five-year rule but the voters of the state have been know to vote against the incumbent government in Assembly polls.
"Historically there has been a direct fight between the Congress and the BJP. It will be wrong to link Gujarat with Himachal. It must still be acknowledged that the Congress still has a powerful presence in Gujarat and HP," he added while refusing to link the loss in Himachal to the rout in Gujarat Assembly polls.
On Sunday, BJP had swept to power in Gujarat for the fourth consecutive term winning 117 seats in the 182-member Assembly. Congress was a distant second with only 59 seats.
Meanwhile, Congress President Sonia Gandhi declined to comment on the Himachal election results.
She was speaking to the media after an emergency meeting of the Congress Working Committee adopted a resolution condoling the demise of former Pakistan prime minister Benazir Bhutto.
