New Delhi: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Sunday raised the issue of closure of Pathribal case by the Indian Army with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The Chief Minister emphasised the need of giving justice to the families of victims and punishment to those responsible for the killings.
Omar also discussed suspension of trade across LoC after the seizure of truck loaded with contraband drugs and stressed the need for amicable resolution of the matter with Pakistan so that the Confidence Building Measures (CBM) of trade across the LOC is not jeopardized.
He had earlier claimed that the acquittal of five army men in the Pathribal encounter case had put the Army's goodwill at stake. Omar had also expressed his displeasure with the Army's investigations into the case.
In 2006, the CBI had indicted the five accused Army personnel - Brig Ajay Saxena, Lt Col Brahendra Pratap Singh, Maj Saurabh Sharma, Maj Amit Saxena and Subedar Idrees Khan - stating that they were involved in the gunning down of five villagers and dubbing them as foreign militants before the media.
The Army had, however, closed its probe in the case, acquitting the five accused soldiers, saying the evidence recorded could not establish prime facie charges against any of them.
