Regional parties are skewing national agenda: PM
Prime Minister says regional parties have limited national appeal.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at a seminar on federalism has said that regional political parties are skewing the national agenda. He said that some of these parties have limited national appeal.

Prime Minister was inaugurating the fourth International Conference on Federalism, attended by delegates from 26 countries including President of Comoros and Swiss Confederation, Vice President of Nigeria and Prime Minister of Ethiopia.

Speaking at the function he said, “Sometimes the resolution of problems acquire an excessive political route and based on regional, fractional ideologies and loyalties can distort the national vision and sense of wider collective purpose.”

However, Revolutionary Socialist Party leader Abani Roy criticised the Prime Minister for his statement.

“What he has said about the nuclear deal and that he's being obstructed by other parties, he shouldn't have said it here as it is internal matter, Roy said.

Doing loud thinking, Singh asked whether a single party state had any advantages in managing Centre-state relations smoothly as opposed to a multi-party system.

"Or is a multi-party model, with national parties dominating the police scene, superior where one can hope that all of them will take a national view on policy issues and help to reinforce the unity of the federation," PTI quoted Prime Minister as saying.

Advocating smooth management of Centre-States ties, he said the Indian experience suggested that relations between the two could give rise to "serious tensions".

The Prime Minister also spoke of pulls and pressures and various challenges on account of river water sharing, natural resources and fiscal federalism.
