New Delhi: In a major relief to activist Teesta Setalvad, Supreme Court on Thursday granted anticipatory bail to her and her husband but directed her to give a complete list of donors who had donated for construction of memorial in Gulbarg Society in Ahmedabad.
The apex court also pulled up the government over the issue of warrant against her and said, "Why do you need Teesta Setalvad and her husband in custody to question them in embezzlement case?"
The Gujarat Police had sought her arrest after the Gujarat High Court rejected her anticipatory bail plea in connection with the embezzlement case. Officials who reached her Juhu residence in Mumbai could not locate her or her husband Javed Anand.
Setalvad is accused of diverting Rs 1.5 crore of donations given for the construction of a museum at the 2002-riot hit Gulbarg Society.
Setalvad's lawyer Prashant Bhushan said, "The Supreme Court has extended the interim bail and reserved its order. It has made it clear to the Gujarat government that there is no need of custodial interrogation. They can get all documents for investigation from Teesta."
The Supreme Court asked Setalvad to furnish details of all bank account of Citizen for Justice and Peace and give all documents and vouchers. The court also permitted the Gujarat government to file an application for cancellation of bail if Setalvad does not cooperate with the police.
