New Delhi: Taking a tough stand on President's rule in Arunachal Pradesh, the Supreme Court on Wednesday called for the state Governor's report recommending the same.
The Supreme Court served a notice to the Centre, seeking a reply on the issue. The next hearing has been scheduled for February 1.
The apex court asked the advocate appearing on behalf of the Arunachal Pradesh Governor to present the report, on the basis of which President's rule was imposed, in 15 minutes.
"You have given a report on why emergency has to be imposed, get it to us in 15 minutes with the date on which the recommendation was sent," said the Supreme Court.
Seeking the assistance of the Attorney General in the matter, the Supreme Court told the government that it would like to hear the AG on the matter as to why President's rule was imposed.
Expressing shock over the imposition of President's rule, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Nabam Tuki had said, "People are disappointed with the imposition of President's rule. We are taking this matter to court and we will seek justice from the Supreme Court."
"Congress party had the majority. Why the other party which has less in numbers trying to destabilise our government. The court has to decide now. The matter was sub-judice and therefore we will wait for the court's order," he said.
The Congress had termed the move as a murder of democracy. "It is really unfortunate that President's rule was imposed in Arunachal, which is ruled by the Congress. This is unconstitutional."
Rubbishing Congress' allegations, BJP spokesperson, Nalin Kohli had said, "Murder of democracy took place when the Congress government imposed emergency in India. Whatever happened in Arunachal was as per our constitution."
On Sunday, the Congress party had approached the Supreme Court challenging Union Cabinet's recommendation for imposing President's Rule in Arunachal Pradesh.
