Kolkata: There seems to be more trouble for West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the Hills after TMC allies Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) on Tuesday supported Gorkha Janamukti Morcha’s (GJM) movement for a separate Gorkhaland.
Speaking to News18, GNLF spokesperson said, Niraj Zimba, said, “For us, the issue of Gorkhaland is our first priority. We have an alliance with the TMC but it is a political meeting and not an ideological alliance.”
On Tuesday, GJM called for an all-party meeting in Darjeeling to discuss the future course of action against the state government’s forced imposition of Bangla language and demand for a separate statehood.
TMC leaders skipped the meeting, but other pro-Gorkhaland parties, including the GNLF, joined the meet and agreed to continue their ‘peaceful’ agitation for a separate state.
Speaking to News18, GJM general secretary Roshan Giri said, “We welcome GNLF stand on this issue. Time has come for all political parties in the Hills to join hands – those who want a separate state. This is a battle for the identity of Gorkhas and the state government is trying to divide us.”
After the meeting, all pro Gorkhaland parties unanimously adopted a resolution in favour of it.
Besides GNLF, others who attended the meet are Gorkhaland Rajya Nirman Morcha, the Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh (apolitical) and the Communist Party of Revolutionary Marxists.
Two other parties from the hills, the All India Gorkha League (AIGL) and Jan Andolan Party (JAP), failed to attend the meeting but extended their support for a separate state.
Bimal Gurung was not present at the meeting and R P Waiba, the vice-president of GJM, chaired the meeting in his absence. The resolution was signed by Suman Sharma, assistant secretary of the BJP Hill district committee.
