Ahmedabad: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Monday slammed the UPA government alleging that it was responsible for pushing the country into grave crisis.

"It's high time to save the nation from the clutches of the Congress party which is under the spell of bad governance. The party has emptied India's coffer and pushed the nation to the brink of a grave crisis," Modi said on Monday during a public function held in Botad. Modi was addressing a public function organised to felicitate him for the creation of new Botad district.

On August 15 Modi had announced the creation of seven new districts in the state including Botad, which has been carved out of Ahmedabad, Surendranagar and Bhavnagar. Targetting the UPA government, Modi said, "Present government has lost the trust of the people as years on central government has repeatedly failed to keep what it has promised to the people of the country.

This has created a grave crisis of trust." "People have lost trust if the rupee will sustain its value or whether it will further fall tomorrow. People fear how much more the diesel or LPG will cost tomorrow," he said. Talking about the Food Security Bill, Modi said, "There is nothing new about it as Gujarat has been giving 35 kgs of foodgrain with wheat at Rs 2 per kg and rice at Rs 3 per kg." "On the contrary, the proposed Act is to provide only 25 kg of food grain which would deprive 10 kg of food grain to 1.47 lakh poor in Gujarat alone," he added.

Modi also took a dig at the Centre alleging that it had been refusing permission to raise the height of Sardar Sarovar Project (SSP) dam on the Narmada river. "Prime Minister now feigns ignorance about Gujarat's repeated memorandum to the Central government for the same. As a result, the surplus rainwater is just flowing down the river into the sea," he said.
