Ahmedabad: Prime Minister Narendra Modi hit out at the Congress on Thursday after Mani Shankar Aiyar called him a “low-life person”, saying the comments reflect the “Mughal mindset” of the party and the people of Gujarat would give them a befitting lesson through the ballot box.
Addressing a poll rally in Surat, Modi said he was proud of his humble background and had done nothing “neech” so far. He said the Congress has aimed all kinds of insults at him, but he would not stoop to their level.
“What all have they called us - donkeys, neech, gandi naali ke keede… They insulted me when I was the CM. They called me ‘Maut ka Saudagar’ and wanted to jail me,” he said.
The Prime Minister said he had not sought revenge against Congress for its “deplorable language” in the last three years, and would not want it now too. “Let us not use bad words against the Congress. Our answer will come through the ballot box, he said, adding, “Congress can keep its language, we will do our work.”
Aiyar, while speaking to reporters in Delhi on Thursday, sparked a political row by saying that Modi was a “low-life uncultured man who practices dirty politics.”
“Mujhko lagta hai ki ye aadmi bahut neech kisam ka aadmi hai, isme koi sabhyata nahi hai, or aise mauke par is kisam ki gandi rajniti karne ki kya avashyakta hai? (This man is a low-life person, he isn't cultured... at this moment why does he need to practice such dirty politics?)”
Modi used the comments to appeal to Gujarati pride and urged the people to show their resentment by voting for the BJP. “Congress called us "neech” but we are living according to our traditions. People of Gujarat will not tolerate this kind of language. People will give befitting reply on 9 and 14,” he said.
He further said he was not ashamed of his background and will continue to serve the state. “Yes, I am from the poor section of society and will spend every moment of my life to work for the poor, dalits, tribals and OBC communities. I don’t feel hurt. I have given up my life for this land. I have given my life to this land,” he added.
