New Delhi: A day after Rahul Gandhi claimed that the Congress government at the Centre tried to control the 1984 anti-Sikh riots and refused to take the onus of the communal carnage, the victims living in a dilapidated colony in Delhi continue to struggle with their grief.

The wounds of the widows of 1984 riots residing in the society reopened once again after Rahul's controversial statement on the incident.

Rani Kaur, a riot victim recalled how her husband and her brother-in-law were killed right before her during the massacre. "They chopped my husband's leg in front of me. I tried to hide him, but they started beating him," Rani said.

Another riot victim, Babu Singh said that he fled from Trilok Puri, one of the worst affected areas, after 10 members of his family were murdered. He stressed that he was enraged after reading Rahul's statements. "There is no justice, I have lost all hope," Singh said.

Pappi Kaur and Dalbir Kaur were aged 15 when the riots took place. They said that even three generations later, the imapct of the riots can still be felt. "There is rampant poverty, and young kids are turning to drugs. My kids aren't educated and small kids also do drugs here," said Pappi.

Rahul came under sharp criticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party and 1984 anti-Sikh riots victims after he kept mum and shied away from tendering an apology for the tragic incident. While giving an interview to a news channel, Rahul deflected questions on whether he should tender an apology for the anti-Sikh riots, however, he admitted that "some Congressmen probably were involved" in the riots.
