DMDK founder-leader and Tamil actor Vijayakanth breathed his last on December 28, 2023, leaving the entertainment and political circles in tears and a sense of tremendous loss. As soon as the news of the Tamil actor’s sudden demise broke out, rich tributes poured in from the members of the film fraternity and politicians. The celebrated personalities took to their X handles to express their sadness and offer prayers to the family. Actor Vijayakanth passed away at the age of 71 in Chennai after being on ventilatory support while battling pneumonia.

Kamal Haasan and Vijayakanth shared screen space in GN Rangarajan and RC Sakthi’s directorial Manakanakku which was released in 1986. The film starred Ambika, Vijayakanth, Kamal Haasan and Radha in lead roles. Vijayakanth had a supporting role of a movie cinematographer, whereas Kamal had a small cameo appearance as his director in the film. The music in the serious drama film was crooned by MS Viswanathan.

Actor-politician Kamal Haasan took to X and shared a heartfelt note in Tamil in honour of DMDK founder Vijayakanth. “The news of the death of my beloved brother Vijayakanth, the founder of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Association, a unique actor and captain of Tamil cinema who was loved by all, is deeply saddened."

“He lived with humanity in every action. He was the creator of innovative ideas in Tamil Nadu politics. He had a helping hand extended to the poor, and fearless courage was his hallmark. Vijayakanth, a revolutionary artist who made his mark in both the fields of cinema and politics, will remain forever in our memories. I offer my heartfelt condolences to all his family, volunteers, and fans who are grieving his loss," Hassan added.
