Captain Vijayakanth, one of the most celebrated actors and revered leaders in Tamil Nadu, left the entire nation mourning after his death on December 28, 2023. He passed away at a private hospital in Chennai due to pneumonia, following which his party, DMDK, issued a statement informing that he was diagnosed with Covid-19 and was on the ventilator. Notably, the actor is known for extending support to many in their needs. There was a time when he emerged as the life-saver of the South Indian Artistes’ Association, Nadigar Sangam. Now, the same association is being criticised for not paying tribute to the deceased actor in a way he deserves.
As per the reports, netizens are unleashing their anger on Nadigar Sangam for not paying tribute to Vijayakanth post his demise. It is being claimed that when another legendary actor Sivaji Ganesan passed away on 21 July 2001, his funeral procession was attended by notable names like Vijayakanth, Sarathkumar, Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan to pay homage to the actor. Many accomplished directors like Bharathiraja and Mani Ratnam also reached to bid adieu to the actor. Vijayakanth, who once served as the president of the association, was not paid a proper homage after his demise.
Actor Vishal, the general secretary of Nadigar Sangam, dropped a post on his social media handle, mourning Vijayakanth’s demise. He wrote, “I came to hear about ‘Captain’ Vijayakanth’s death. Annae, forgive me. Please forgive me. Honestly, I should be standing by your side, looking at your face once and touching your feet at this time. It’s my mistake that I’m not in the country now and for that, please forgive me.” Actor Karthi, the treasurer of the association, also released a condolence message on social media.
The post prompted people to call out the actors for not attending Vijayakanth’s funeral. It is also being highlighted that none of these actors came to represent Nadigar Sangam at the time of his funeral, despite Vijayakanth’s long association with the organisation. Notably, legendary actors MGR (MG Ramachandran), Sivaji Ganesan, and MR Radha established Nadigar Sangam in 1952. The organisation was neck-deep in debt at the time when the actor took over as its president. Vijayakanth managed to save the union with his tactical approach and he is one of the reasons why the film body is functioning properly till now.
