Google has updated the website and mobile application of its Arts & Culture platform, home to all kinds of content from partners signed up to its Cultural Institute program.
Google created its Cultural Institute in 2011 in a bid to make the world's cultural heritage accessible online to anyone and everyone. This entirely free service already counts more than 1,100 partner institutions. Google Arts & Culture offers users online access to thousands of works of art from the world's museum collections. Users can also virtually visit and explore the history of the world's most prestigious monuments and cultural establishments.
This updated version of Google Arts & Culture notably brings two new ways of exploring works of art featured on the platform: a color-base search and a chronologically ordered timeline.
Google has also added an innovative "Art Recogniser" tool that can identify works in selected museums and show detailed descriptions about each one. This feature is currently available at the Dulwich Picture Gallery, London, the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia and the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC.
Finally, with the mobile application, users can slip their smartphone into Google's Cardboard virtual reality viewer to step into the street art scene in Rome, visit the Temple of Zeus in Olympia (Greece) or take a look inside the White House.
The Google Arts & Culture application is available to download free from Google Play (Android) and the Apple App Store (iOS)
