Samsung, at its recent Galaxy Unpacked Event in Paris, announced plans to launch a mixed-reality headset gear later this year. Named the XR Headset, the device will compete against Apple’s Vision Pro.
TM Roh, Samsung’s president of Mobile Division, in his address at the event, spoke about the upcoming Samsung’s mixed reality platform and confirmed “A new XR platform is coming later this year,” leaving the fans excited.
According to Sammobile, the South Korean tech company’s first XR headset is expected to run a version of Google's Android operating system, specially designed for the upcoming headsets. It will reportedly use a Qualcomm Snapdragon chip, which might be the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2+.
Rick Osterloh, Google’s senior vice president of Platforms and Devices, said at the event, “Looking forward, we're collaborating to bring next-gen experiences across Galaxy products from smartphones and wearables to even future technologies like the upcoming XR platform. We've been working closely to develop in partnership with Samsung and Qualcomm.”
However, Samsung didn’t reveal whether they will just showcase the XR headset later this year or will launch it for the users.
The XR headset could feature two 3,500ppi Micro OLED or OLEDoS screens from Samsung Display's subsidiary, eMagin. It will likely be a high-end device that works with Galaxy smartphones, reported Sammobile.
Samsung teased the XR headset at their Unpacked event in February earlier this year.
Considering we’re halfway through 2024, Samsung might showcase the XR headset at its Samsung Developers Conference (SDC), scheduled on October 3.
As per a previous report by ZDNET, Samsung restated its development plans for the XR headset following the launch of the Apple Vision Pro. The company reportedly commissioned a higher quality display for the headgear to meet Apple's 4K resolution display in its mixed reality headset.
Apart from the announcement, Samsung also unveiled several new gadgets at their Galaxy Unpacked Event including Galaxy Ring, Galaxy Z Fold 6 smartphone, Galaxy ZFlip 6 smartphone, Galaxy Watch 7, Galaxy Watch Ultra and the Galaxy Buds 3 and Buds 3 Pro.
