A viral video has captured the attention of many, featuring a Pakistani religious scholar offering a surprising take on the validity of marriage within the world of TV dramas. Despite originally airing during Ramadan 2023, the footage recently gained widespread traction, as reported by Dialogue Pakistan. In the clip, a panel of religious scholars engages in discussion on a private TV channel, with one raising the question of whether nikah ceremonies depicted between actors in TV dramas hold any real significance.

The cleric’s response was nothing short of startling: “Yes, certainly. If a nikah is performed in a TV drama scene with two witnesses present, then it will be considered a valid marriage.” This assertion didn’t go unnoticed, drawing sharp criticism from both celebrities and the general public. Notably, model-turned-actor Nadia Hussain voiced her concerns, arguing that such statements not only endorse obscenity but also have the potential to incite violence against women.

She stressed the fictitious nature of nikah scenes in dramas, urging viewers not to confuse them with reality.

Nadia elaborated, “The names of the actors, the two witnesses present, the maulvi performing the ceremony, the signatures on the Nikahnama – none of it is real. It’s just scribble, and the Nikahnama isn’t even registered with the union council,” She emphasised that only registered marriages hold legal weight.

Following the uproar, social media erupted with a blend of outrage and humor, as individuals playfully extended the logic to absurd extremes. One individual sarcastically remarked, “By that logic if someone dies in the movie or show, and they follow the entire procedure, that mean people should consider them dead.” Another quipped, “And if someone has an accident in the play, will he be considered disabled?” raising similar absurd scenarios, such as the division of property in a drama.

Amidst the jest, some jokingly extended congratulations to actors like Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan for their “marriage” in a drama. Others playfully congratulated Salman Khan for no longer being single.

Jokes apart, was it meant to be a joke?
