Outrage In Indore As Professor Asks Students To Write Their Own Condolence Messages
A professor has assigned his students to write a condolence message as a part of their university assignment.

A recent incident at Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, has sparked widespread outrage and reached the Human Rights Commission. The controversy began when MBA students were assigned by their professor, Dr. Atul Bharat, to write a condolence message for themselves, along with their photo, as part of a class exercise. This unusual assignment has led to a public outcry, with many calling for action against the professor.

Dr Atul Bharat, who serves as the Group Director of the Career Advance Cell and teaches Management Theory, explained that the assignment was meant to encourage creative thinking. He stated that the task aimed to help students reflect on how they want to be remembered and gain insight into their existence. According to him, this reflective process would assist students in shaping the direction of their lives. Dr. Bharat also noted that out of around 110 students, only one objected to the assignment, following her mother’s advice. Despite her refusal to participate, the student faced no consequences and continued attending the class.

The assignment has angered many, leading to complaints being filed. Critics argue that asking students to write their condolence messages is insensitive, especially considering how parents might react to such a task. Alok Dawar, a former working council member, is among those demanding action against the professor. He raised concerns about the psychological impact of the assignment on both students and their families.

In response to the growing backlash, the Head of the Department of the School of Economics, Professor Kanhaiya Ahuja, has requested an explanation from Dr. Bharat. A decision on whether disciplinary action will be taken is expected after a review of the professor’s response.

This incident has ignited a debate on the appropriateness of such exercises in educational settings, with many questioning the ethical implications of this teaching method.
