Online dating is always risky, and many untoward incidents have stemmed from dating someone you met on the internet. While some do manifest into genuine relationships, 23-year-old Jasmine Triggs from Indiana, US was not that lucky. She learnt the cons of dating someone online the hard way. Jasmine met a man called Jamal online, who claimed that he was from Texas.
Jasmine and Jamal chatted for more than a week and soon Jasmine realised that she had developed a liking for Jamal. This is why she was overwhelmed with joy when Jamal invited her on a date in his city.
Excited to meet her crush, Jasmine spent Rs 31,643 on plane fare to fly from Indiana to Texas which was around 2,400 kilometres. However, she was in for a rude shock when she realised that Jamal had blocked her number while she was still in the air. As soon as Jasmine landed at the airport, she knew she was duped and stranded as Jamal, who was supposed to be there to pick her up was absent, and none of her messages to him would go through.
Additionally, Jamal had also promised to pay the plane fare for her return ticket back home. Jasmine said that Jamal shared all kinds of stories from his life while they were chatting like how he had been a cheerleader in school and that he presently owns a robotic company.
“We’d been getting to know each other, and it had a sexual aspect too. He asked me sexual questions and mentioned he couldn’t wait to see me, even telling me he’d cleaned his living room for my visit. However, after I made the five-hour trip to Texas, none of my messages to him went through,” Jasmine said.
After messaging him and calling him multiple times, she realised that Jamal had blocked her number and she started panicking. However, fortunately, she knew a friend who resided in the area and she was able to go and stay with her. She now believes that either this was Jamal’s idea of a sick joke, or he had a girlfriend and was already married.
