Indian chess prodigy Dommaraju Gukesh made history by becoming the youngest-ever player to win the FIDE Candidates tournament in Toronto. In a tense final round, Gukesh secured victory with a draw against seasoned competitor Hikaru Nakamura. Remarkably, at just 17 years old, Gukesh joins the esteemed ranks of chess legend Viswanathan Anand as the second Indian player to achieve this prestigious honour.
Following the conclusion of the final match, attendees at the venue cheered for him, while social media platforms were filled with congratulatory messages for the young prodigy. Gukesh will now play in the final of the World Championship, where he will face off against China’s Ding Liren later this year. Amidst the exciting atmosphere, a video of Gukesh at the age of 11, speaking about his mission to become a world chess champion has gone viral.
In the video circulating online, when the interviewer asked about his future ambitions, the young Gukesh confidently stated, “I want to become the youngest world chess champion.” The footage then transitions to Gukesh surrounded by fans, signing autographs and playing the game with fellow champions during the recent tournament. Following his historic win at the Candidates Chess Tournament, Dommaraju Gukesh exuded joy and reflected on his upcoming challenge against Ding Liren in the World Championship. The 17-year-old said, “I’m mostly just happy about winning the tournament. I don’t really care about the youngest and all these records but you know it’s a nice thing to say. I haven’t really thought about it (strategy), I just got to know the result and to be honest, the main strategy will just to be play good and be in the right mindset. I’m very excited to play the world championship and really looking forward to all the preparations and being there.”
Talking about his recent win, Gukesh added, “The main thing was that I was just in the right mindset throughout the event from the start to the end. I was in good spirits and I was fully motivated and I really wanted to win the event. When all these things come together also it was it was helpful that I was sharpen of Chess wise and I managed to play some good chess but yeah I would say mainly my mental attitude in this tournament was very very good.”
Meanwhile, throughout his career, Dommaraju Gukesh has consistently amazed chess enthusiasts around the world. He became India’s youngest grandmaster at the age of 12 years.
