Woman's Clifftop Proposal Death in Turkey Leads to Boyfriend's Arrest amid 'Signs of Argument'

A man in Turkey was arrested by police following the death of his girlfriend, who fell 100ft from a cliff in the seaport city of Çanakkale. Yesim Demir and her boyfriend, Nizamettin Gursu, were on vacation, celebrating their recent engagement at the famous Polente Cape in the city.

At the time of Demir’s death, 42-year-old Gursu claimed the tragic incident occurred as they enjoyed a romantic moment on the cliffs, with her girlfriend accidentally falling after losing her balance. “We chose the cliffs to have a romantic memory after the proposal. We drank some alcohol. Everything happened at once. She lost her balance and fell down,” he was quoted as saying by UK’s Daily Mail.

However, suspicions arose when Demir’s family filed a criminal complaint, alleging that the couple had a heated argument following her rejection of Gursu’s proposal. Contrary to expectations, her engagement ring was found in Gursu’s pocket, not on her finger. Moreover, “signs of a serious argument” between the two were found at the clifftop sunset spot.

The family said that Demir, fearful of heights, wouldn’t have willingly approached the cliff edge. The tides started turning against Gursu when signs of a violent struggle, including broken glasses and a damaged speaker, were discovered at the scene. The family insisted that Demir had intended to end the relationship.

Gursu was taken into custody on suspicion of deliberate homicide, the UK newspaper said. The family highlighted Demir’s struggles with panic attacks, asserting that she would never have willingly approached the cliff edge. Gursu remains in custody pending trial.
