South Africa’s pace duo of Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen collided with each other during the T20 World Cup 2024 Super Eight match against the co-hosts West Indies today. The incident unfolded during the eighth over of the West Indies innings when Kyle Mayers struck a powerful shot straight down the ground off Aiden Markram’s bowling. Rabada, who was placed at the long-on region, followed the trajectory of the ball, sensing an opportunity to complete a catch, Jansen also rushed to the boundary line. Both players jumped while keeping their eyes on the ball. The Proteas fielders failed to stop the six and ended up knocking each other down. The collision looked intense and it could have left Rabada and Jansen with a bad injury. The International Cricket Council (ICC) later shared a video of the incident on Instagram with a caption that read, “A heavy knock but both players are okay.”

Marco Jansen appeared to be in pain after collapsing onto the ground. He did get back on his feet but could not continue to play. Jansen left the ground and stayed at the dugout for the remainder of the innings, missing the remaining two overs of his spell. Rabada, on the other hand, returned to action immediately.
Rain caused some interruptions during the Super Eight fixture between the West Indies and South Africa. The Proteas put up a dominant bowling performance and restricted their opponents to 135 runs. For the Caribbean side, Roston Chase emerged as the highest scorer of the game having played a fine knock of 52 off 42 balls. The second innings was reduced to 17 overs due to rain, with South Africa getting a revised target of 123 runs.
The West Indies put some pressure on their opponents by picking three wickets in the powerplay. Heinrich Klaasen and Tristan Stubbs brought South Africa back into the contest, scoring 22 and 29 runs respectively. Marco Jansen came in to bat after the dismissal of Klaasen. The all-rounder contributed with an unbeaten 21 comprising a boundary and as many six. South Africa ultimately completed the chase with five balls to spare, entering the semi-finals as the table-toppers.
