Yashasvi Jaiswal will open for India in the first Test against New Zealand, which is set to be played from October 16 to 20 at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

The first Test of the three-match series between India and New Zealand is set to start on Wednesday (October 16). During the match, which is scheduled to take place at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, star Indian opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal will have a chance to join legendary English batter Joe Root in an elite list. The 22-year-old left-handed batter needs 71 runs to become the second player after Root to score 1000 Test runs in 2024.

Before the start of the first Test against the Black Caps, Jaiswal has 929 runs to his name in eight matches for India. Root, who sits at No. 1 position in the ICC Test batter’s ranking, has hammered 1248 runs in 13 matches played so far. He crossed the 1000-run mark during his 262-run knock in the first innings of the first Test against Pakistan, which England won by an innings and 47 runs in Multan last week.

Sri Lanka’s Kamindu Mendis also sits above Jaiswal as of now. The 26-year-old left-handed batter has amassed a total of 943 runs in seven Tests played in 2024.
