Fit and Healthy Marathoner Diagnosed with Stage 4 Cancer Reveals 3 Crucial Warning Signs
Govind Sandhu, talks about his cancer diagnosis and the ignored symptoms that preceded it after finishing a half-marathon.

After finishing a half-marathon, 38-year-old Bondi marathon runner Govind Sandhu revealed his unexpected stage four non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma diagnosis. Sandhu is in good health. Given Sandhu’s active lifestyle and her role as an executive supervising Global Music Partnerships at TikTok Australia, her diagnosis came as a surprise to her.

Sandhu disclosed the three warning indicators he first disregarded, which finally resulted in his diagnosis in early May, in a heartfelt Instagram video. “The day after that I just went downhill (with a) swollen knee, although I thought that was because my knee was injured from a stack when I was in Hobart running some trails,” Sandhu explained.

He went on, ‘I experienced severe body pains, perspiration, and all the symptoms that would lead one to believe I had the flu or Covid.’ And I only got worse over the course of four weeks.’ Following his participation in the Sydney Half Marathon, his condition rapidly worsened, leading him to seek medical assistance.

Sandhu’s story is a vital reminder of the value of paying attention to one’s body and getting medical help when strange symptoms don’t go away. “Firstly, it’s important to remember that I’m talking about non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and that I’m not an expert,” he clarified. “Secondly, I would encourage you to speak to your doctor about warning signs, but also be proactive and get your blood checked at least twice a year.”

Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma is a type of cancer that originates in the lymphatic system, which is integral to the body’s immune defense. According to the Mayo Clinic, “In non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, white blood cells called lymphocytes grow abnormally and can form growths (tumors) throughout the body.”

Sandhu’s candid revelation underscores the significance of regular health check-ups and being attentive to the body’s signals. As a prominent figure in the social media industry and an avid marathoner, his experience highlights that cancer can affect anyone, regardless of their fitness level or lifestyle.

Sandhu wants to urge people to prioritise their health and spread awareness about non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma by sharing his journey. His message is very clear: taking an active and knowledgeable approach to one’s health can have a significant impact.
