Pokémon GO
Tap the Pokémon that appears on your phone after it vibrates. Keep an eye on your phone screen as you walk around—a vibration means that a Pokémon has appeared nearby. Tap the small avatar of the Pokémon on your screen to start the battle encounter. The type of Pokémon you encounter will depend on the weather in your area. For example, you’re more likely to bump into Grass-, Fire-, and Ground-Type Pokémon when it’s sunny outside.
Enter the battle and analyze the wild Pokémon. Once you tap the Pokémon, your game redirects you to a battle screen, where you face off against a zoomed-in version of the Pokémon. Look for a ring that’s growing and shrinking around the center of the Pokémon: is it green, orange, or red? Green rings indicate Pokémon that are easy to catch, while orange and red rings indicate more challenging Pokémon—red, especially. If the Pokémon seems especially difficult to catch, hit the Berry icon at the bottom of the screen to feed it a delicious Berry. This may help it to be caught more easily.
Swipe your finger to throw the Poké Ball when the ring is at its smallest. Rest your fingertip on the Poké Ball and swipe up to throw the ball toward the Pokémon. Ideally, try to time the ball so it hits the moving ring when it’s tiny. If you successfully throw the ball while the ring is small, the word “Excellent!” should pop up on your screen. Need more Poké Balls? Visit a PokéStop or Pokémon Gym in your area to collect some more. Pro tip: If you’re facing off against an especially challenging Pokémon, switch out your Poké Ball for a Great Ball or Ultra Ball. You can do this by tapping the Poké Ball icon at the bottom of the screen.
Wait and see if you caught the Pokémon. Upon a successful catch, the ball will click shut, and you’ll be redirected to a preview screen for the Pokémon you just caught. Alternatively, the Pokémon can break out—if this happens, throw more Poké Balls at it.
Pokémon Legends: Arceus
Option 1: Throw a Poké Ball without battling the Pokémon. Arceus offers a unique, open-world experience that’s different from other Pokémon games. Instead of encountering a Pokémon and getting redirected to a new battle screen, Arceus allows you to throw a Poké Ball directly at your desired Pokémon without fighting it. Simply hit the “ZR” button to line up your shot, and then let go of the button to throw your ball. If you change your mind, hit “B” to stop your throw.
Option 2: Battle the Pokémon and then throw a Poké Ball. If the wild Pokémon is on the aggressive side, use the “ZR” button to aim and toss one of your party Pokémon out into the Overworld. This initiates a battle, which allows you to weaken the Pokémon with attacks before throwing a Poké Ball at it (like traditional Pokémon console games). Try to throw out your Pokémon before the wild Pokémon realizes you’re nearby. This can net you an extra turn!
Most Pokémon Games
Explore wild grass, flowers, caves, and water. Pokémon universes are filled with all sorts of wild ecosystems for you to explore, including patches of wild grass/flowers, expansive lakes/oceans, and cave systems. Explore these areas in your game for a chance at encountering wild Pokémon. Some Pokémon only appear in certain areas in-game. For example, you won’t find the Water- and Ice-Type Dewgong in a patch of grass.
Battle the Pokémon that appears. Use your Pokémon team to lower the wild Pokémon’s health (without making it faint completely); the less health it has, the easier it is to catch. Using abilities that apply non-lethal status effects, like Paralysis or Sleep, can also be helpful.
Throw a Poké Ball at the wild Pokémon in an attempt to catch it. Once the Pokémon has low enough health, throw the Poké Ball of your choice at it. If you don’t succeed, continue battling and throwing Poké Balls. Consider using a Poké Ball with a higher catch rate to boost your chances of success. Encounter Legendary Pokémon in specific locations. Legendary Pokémon are typically interwoven into a game’s core storyline and can’t be randomly encountered in the wild (with a few exceptions, like Mesprit in Diamond and Pearl). To catch these Pokémon, you’ll have to visit a specific location or reach a certain point in the game to successfully battle and catch them. Always make sure to save before these encounters! For example, in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, you can only find and catch Moltres at the top of Mt. Ember. In Pokémon Emerald, you can only locate Rayquaza after it’s stopped the battle between Kyogre and Groudon.
