Ahmedabad: Four accused in the 2008 Ahmedabad serial blasts case have filed bail applications in a local court, contending that there was no evidence against them. Judge B J Dhandha on Wednesday heard both the accused's lawyers and the government lawyers. The verdict is likely to be pronounced on August 6.
Government lawyer opposed the applications, saying that the four were a part of the terror conspiracy which led to over 20 synchronised blasts across the city on July 26, 2008, claiming 57 lives.
Bail has been sought by Hasib Raza, Ummar Kabira, Naved Kadri and Salim Sipahi.
The proceedings were conducted through video conference between the Sabarmati jail and the courtroom, as the movement of the accused outside the jail has been restricted due to security reasons.
While Raza argued himself, the other three were represented by Aziz Alvi who contended that there was no evidence of being conspirators against his clients, nor was there any recovery of incriminating evidence from them.
Raza argued that his role was limited to giving shelter to absconding accused Abdus Subhan Tauqueer and others, and he was nowhere connected to the conspiracy.
The prosecutors said that all four had been a part of banned outfit SIMI, and were actively involved in the terror conspiracy.
Their individual roles might have been limited but they were a part of the larger plot to spread terror in Gujarat, prosecution said.
Granting bail to the accused would hamper the probe, said the prosecution team of advocates HM Dhruv, Mithesh Amin, Sudhir Bhrambhatt and Amit Patel.
Charges have been framed against 67 accused in the case, while over 30 others are still absconding.
