HYDERABAD: Thieves stole silver and cash from a jewellery store at General Bazar on Wednesday after making a hole on the ceiling of an century-old building where the shop is located. Nearly 30 kg silver bars and Rs 2 lakh in cash was stolen. The theft took place in Sri Jala Ram Jewellers located at the General Bazar, which is just a few feet away from the Mahankali police station. The store-owner, Yogesh who resides at Warasiguda closed the shop around 10 p.m on Tuesday and returned on Wednesday morning at 10 a.m to open the shop. As he entered, he found the shop ransacked.“The miscreants made a hole on the ceiling and entered the premises,” Mahankali police inspector S Ranga Rao said. A one feet diameter hole was made, the inspector said. “We suspect two or more persons might have broken into the shop,” he added. The shop is located in a complex which is nearly 100-years old. Though there were some residents living in the complex earlier, most have vacated the premises as it started to crumble. “The complex was build with limestone and we suspect the hole was made easily. It might have taken only a few hours for miscreants to make the opening,’’ investigators said adding the offenders might have used light machinery to make the hole.Once inside the shop, the miscreants ransacked the racks and stole nearly 30 kg silver bars. Similarly, offenders broke open the cash chest and stole Rs 2 lakh.  “Though there are closed circuit cameras inside the shop, they are not functioning,” Ranga Rao said.
