Abbas calls for peace talks with Israel
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas urged militants in Gaza strip to halt attacks and ensure lasting peace with Israel.

Ramallah: Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Monday called for Israel to return to the negotiating table during a speech marking the of anniversary of what the Palestinians consider the ‘catastrophe’ Israel’s creation (58th anniversary of the founding of Israel in 1948 and the expulsion of Palestinians).

Abbas also urged the Palestinian militants in the Gaza strip to halt rocket attacks on Israel.

He said the violence encourages Israel to step up its military activity and proceed with unilateral plans to impose a border on the Palestinians.

He urged the Israeli’s to come together to make this year a year of peace.

"I tell our neighbors that we want to make a just and lasting peace with them and want a better future for our and their children," he said in remarks set to be broadcast on Palestinian television and radio on Monday.
