Acute shortage of water
BBMP had dug up 22 borewells,of these, five of them failed to yield water at Bagalkunte..

BANGALORE: Have you ever come across a person halting water tank on each side of the road to sell water just like a vendor selling kerosene? If not,  visit Bagalkunte Ward where there are people who come with a water tank  to sell water. It is not that the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has not done anything to mitigate water woes at various localities in Bagalkunte Ward. The BBMP had dug up 22 borewells,of these, five of them failed to yield water. Although there is a plenty of water in the borewells, the water is salty. “The BBMP supplies water through borewells but the water is not potable. We have to buy water from private water suppliers. We have to pay ` 2 per plastic pot of water,’’ says S Sujatha, a resident of 10th Cross near Shiva Temple. The residents want the BBMP authorities to pressurise the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) authorities to supply Cauvery water to all the areas in Bagalkunte without any discrimination. “I have already discussed the matter with the BWSSB authorities about the need to supply Cauvery water to Bagalkunte Ward. There is no dearth for groundwater in this locality but water is not fit for drinking or cooking,’’ says B R Chandrasekhar, Corporator. The other major problem in Bagalkunte is garbage. They allege that BBMP had not taken any measures to clear the garbage on regular basis. A vacant site on 11th Cross has been converted into a garbage dumping place. “The empty sites have been converted into garbage dumping places. The heaps of garbage on these sites has become a nuisance for us. I hope the BBMP authorities take suitable measures to clear the garbage on regular basis,’’ says HYadavendra, a resident. It is learnt that there are 20 pourakarmikas to keep the Bagalkunte Ward clean and 15 tri-wheelers to transport the garbage. “We need 70 more pourakarmikas to ensure no garbage in Bagalkunte Ward. We require two more lorries to transport the garbage on daily basis,’’ narrates Chandrasekhar. He said the BBMP has chalked out a plan to implement rain water harvesting at as many parks in Bagalkunte as possible. The BBMP has also prepared a plan to develop a playground on a five acre land. As far as funds are concerned, the BBMP had allocated ` 5 crore to take up various development works in Bagalkunte Ward last year. “The funds were spent on asphalting the roads and strengthening open drains. The BBMP had spent ` 80 lakh to construct a ward office. It has also allocated ` 3 crore for development works this year. Thus focus will be to keep the ward free from garbage and mitigate water woes,’’ says the corporator. He also adds that BWSSB will supply Cauvery water by April 2012.
