CHENNAI: An inquiry is being conducted into a complaint filed by AIADMK workers against Deputy Commissioner of Police, T Nagar, alleging that they had been beaten up by police, on his orders, while at an eatery on Sunday.Sources said AIADMK workers, including Jayalalithaa Peravai area secretary Sabapathy and the party’s area secretary Nungai Maran, were at an eatery on Nungambakkam High Road after completing the decorations marking Chief Minister’s New Delhi trip. The seven workers were having tea, when DCP (T Nagar) T Thirunavukkarasu, who was patrolling the area, arrived and asked the hotel staff to down the shutters, as it was past closing time. A verbal altercation ensued between the AIADMK workers and the DCP and the latter asked the local police personnel to remove them from the hotel. The police used “mild force” to disperse the crowd and the seven party workers were taken to the Nungambakkam Police Station. On hearing about the incident, Information minister G Senthamizhan and Thousand Lights MLA B Valarmathi, from AIADMK, went to the police station and demanded the release of the detained workers. The workers lodged a complaint against the DCP, alleging that they were beaten up without any provocation. They were let off later. JCP (Central) K Shankar, who is conducting an inquiry into the incident, told Express that he would not like to comment on the issue.
