BANGALORE: Senior Congress leader B K Chandrashekar has urged Assembly Speaker K G Bopaiah to resign in the backdrop of stringent and caustic remarks made by Supreme Court on the issue of disqualification of MLAs. “The prestige, reputation, image and credibility of the office of Speaker are at stake following severe indictment by the apex court. In no uncertain terms, the judges of the highest court of land has told that the Speaker’s action in disqualification was malafide, partial and partisan. Nothing can be as damning as these remarks are. I demand Bopaiah to tender his resignation in the interest of Assembly’s prestige and decorum,” Chandrashekar said, while speaking to reporters here on Saturday. He further said that in the event of Bopaiah not quitting the office on his own, then the ruling BJP must replace him if the saffron party believes in the importance of Constitutional Order and dignity of parliamentary democracy. He charged Bopaiah of destroying forest wealth besides flora and fauna in his constituency by insisting for laying of a road inside forest area. The Congress leader said that the high-powered committee headed by chief minister must take a final call on this issue and ask the Speaker to withdraw his demand for a road in a sensitive ecological zone.
