BJP demands fresh probe against Chawla
The BJP will once again approach the President to seek the removal of Election Commissioner Naveen Chawla.

New Delhi The BJP will once again approach the President to seek the removal of Election Commissioner Naveen Chawla, who has been given a clean chit in connection with donations given to private trusts run by his relatives.

A delegation, which will include NDA Convener George Fernandes and BJP leaders Sushma Swaraj, V K Malhotra, Ravi Shankar Prasad and Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, will meet the President on Saturday and demand a fresh probe.

The BJP said the Chief Election Commissioner, and not Attorney General Milon Banerjee, should have probed whether Chawla’s impartiality had been compromised due his link with the trusts.

Prasad accused the Prime Minister and Banerjee of acting as "extra" Constitutional authorities by “trying to save” Chawla. The Prime Minister was "throwing" all Constitutional propriety to the winds in order to “save” Chawla, he alleged.

The BJP claimed Chawla's impartiality as Election Commissioner is doubtful because of his "proximity" to the Congress and its President.

As many as 205 Opposition MPs had given a petition to the President, alleging that trusts connected with Chawla’s family had received funds from Congress MPs from their Local Area Development Scheme.

The President forwarded the case to the Prime Minister, who asked Banerjee to look into the case.
