THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Commemorating the World Blood Donor Day, HLL Lifecare Ltd, one of the largest blood bag manufacturers in the country, on Tuesday launched a massive SMS campaign on blood donation, targeting to reach over 55 lakh customers of BSNL in Kerala. Health Minister Adoor Prakash formally launched the SMS campaign on the importance of blood donation being unfolded by HLL associate organisation Hindustan Latex Family Planning Promotion Trust (HLFPPT) in association with the BSNL.He also inaugurated a Help Desk named ‘Heart Beats’ for assisting prospective blood donors, set up by the HLFPPT in association with the Kerala State AIDS Control Society, by handing over the first registration card.The Help Desk intends to help patients admitted at the Regional Cancer Centre and Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute during emergencies. It will channelise the donors to the patients. Persons who want to donate blood voluntarily can register their details, including name, place, blood group and phone number to the mobile number 9072860299 or SMS in this number or register online at [email protected]."The pioneering effort by the HLL Lifecare to take the noble message of blood donation to the masses needs to be appreciated and lauded. Active and intense efforts are inevitable in spotting those willing to donate blood to the needy. Likewise, I also hope that the Help Desk will be of immense help to the patients in other government hospitals also and not just the two hospitals alone,’’ the Minister said, after launching the initiatives.HLL Lifecare Technical Director M D Sreekumar, senior vice-presidents Babu Thomas,  K R S Krishnan, S R Panicker, and N Venkitaraman, assistant vice-president (PR) S Jayaraj and DGM (PR) Rajesh Divakaran were among those who attended the function.Camp heldMinister for Health Adoor Prakash on Tuesday inaugurated the World Blood Donor Day celebrations jointly organised by Kerala State AIDS Control Society (KSACS) and Kerala State Blood Transfusion Council in association with HLL Lifecare Limited. Minister for Transport V S Sivakumar presided over the ceremony, in which Thiruvananthapuram City Corporation Mayor K Chandrika was the chief guest. Sivakumar donated his blood, prior to the mass blood donation camp organised in connection with the observation. The function also saw the commencement of a 30-day-long campaign to spread awareness on voluntary blood donation, raising the slogan ‘More Blood, More Life’ as well as the SMS campaign, in association with Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited. The celebrations were kicked off by a rally that was flagged off from Kanakakkunnu Palace and which concluded at VJT Hall. Regular blood donors from all parts of the State were honoured during the ceremony. Arun Gokul Das, a dedicated blood donor, who has crossed the milestone of 150 blood donations, was also felicitated during the event. Awards were given away to colleges and non-governmental organisations who had conducted most number of blood donation camps in the State. The College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram, received the award for conducting the most number of blood donation camps.
