HYDERABAD: The Global Hospitals and Healthcity, Chennai has performed India’s first successful single lung transplant surgery on December 16. The patient was 33-year-old Iraqi patient, Kareem Hamed Ameen, who had been suffering interstitial lung disease for over two years now.The patient was oxygen dependent all this while. The donor for this cause was an 18-year old boy from Nellore, who suffered multiple injuries and was brain dead.The boy’s family allowed his heart, lung, liver and kidneys to be provided to patients with end-stage disorders.The team of doctors who performed the surgery included Dr Govini Subramani (Cardiothoracic surgeon), Dr V Kirtivasan, Dr Raja Saravanan, Dr Ganesh, Dr Soundararajan, Dr Manohar (anaesthetist) and Dr Vijil Raguian and Dr Srinivas (pulmonologists).The first such operation in the world was performed by Dr Joel Cooper in 1986 at the University of Toronto.
