Lahore: A British girl of Pakistani origin was allegedly kidnapped from a busy market in the eastern Pakistani city, police officials said on Monday. Ayesha Ali, a 21-year-old college student from London, was shopping with her sister and brother-in-law in Liberty Market on Sunday when she was allegedly abducted.
Police officials said Ali entered a boutique with her sister while her brother-in-law remained in the car.
"In the boutique, she told her sister that she had forgotten her purse and cellphone in the car and was going to get them. But she did not reach the car or return to the shop," a police official said.
A case of kidnapping was registered by police following a complaint from Ali's brother-in-law Muhammad Rauf.
Ali had travelled to Mirpur town of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in August and was slated to return to Britain after a week.
"Ayesha's passport is missing, raising suspicions that she might have skipped on her own.
"However, we are recording the statements of shopkeepers to ascertain whether she was kidnapped," Superintendent of Police Awais Malik said.
"We are investigating all aspects as complaints of forced marriages of British girls of Pakistani origin with Pakistani men are on the rise," Malik said.
