A shocking incident has come to light in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras where a brother and sister reportedly married each other and several other married couples tied the knot again to fraudulently receive government benefits meant for newly married couples from the economic weaker sections of the society.
The fraud was exposed after a complaint from local residents, following which the local SDM took action and ordered an investigation.
What Is The Case?
The scam was orchestrated to receive benefits under the Mukhyamantri Samuhik Vivah Yojana, which promises Rs 35,000 in the bank account of the bride, essential goods worth Rs 10,000 for the couple besides the Rs 6,000 expenditure in solemnizing the marriage.
According to reports, two married couples residing in Sikandrarao were remarried under the scheme. Additionally, a case of a brother and sister marrying each other has also been reported. Local residents raised the issue with the SDM, leading to an order for an investigation.
According to media reports, complainants alleged that a municipal employee arranged these fake marriages to get money under the community marriage scheme.
SDM Ved Singh Chauhan assured proper investigation followed by action against the guilty.
Notably, a mass marriage event was organised in Hathras on December 15, 2023 during which 217 couples were married.
