Can A-G Vahanvati defend PM in 2G scam case?
Vahanvati had earlier given an opinion in favour of the sacked Telecom Minister A Raja.

New Delhi: The PM's legal defence in the 2G spectrum scam has run into trouble.

After Attorney General Goolam Vahanvati replaced Solicitor General Gopal Subramanium to represent the PM in the Supreme Court, a conflict of interest accusation has come up against Vahanvati.

Vahanvati had earlier given an opinion in favour of the sacked Telecom Minister A Raja. In a letter written to the PM on 26th December 2007, Raja said he had discussions with Vahanavati and had taken his legal counsel.

Vahanvati had asked Raja to take pro-active decisions as per the telecom guidelines to avoid any further confusion.

The stand of Ghoolam Vahanvati is directly contradictory to what his parent ministry, the Ministry of Law and Justice said which was that an empowered Group of Ministers look into the matter.

Meanwhile, A-G Vahanvati told CNN-IBN that there is no conflict despite an earlier opinion in favour of A Raja. " I appeared for the Department of Telecom (DoT) before the TBSAT in Nov-Dec 2007 and before the Delhi HC single bench in January 2008. I have never given any opinion to A Raja," he said.
