New Delhi: An independent candidate in the Manipur Assembly elections was abducted from his home in Tamenglong district on Saturday, a day before the Prime Minister visits the state.
A PTI report from Imphal said around suspected Naga militants attacked the house of Khangthauanang Panmei and took him away after beating up his security guards and supporters.
The abductors took away eight guns and ammunition and damaged Panmei 's house. Chief minister O Ibobi Singh and Election Commission officials have reached Tamenglong. Army helicopters are helping in searching for Panmei.
Social organisations gave the Deputy Commissioner a memorandum and asked know how Panmei could be abducted when security is supposed to have been increased for the PM’s visit.
The United Naga Council, a separatist group, had earlier warned that politicians fighting elections against its candidates must withdraw their nomination.
Protest against PM’s visit
In a related incident, a Manipuri rebel group has called for a state-wide strike against the PM’s visit. The Revolutionary People's Front (RPF), which wants an independent Manipur, claims that the Centre has ignored the security forces’ ‘atrocities’ in the state.
"The Central Government has ignored the struggle of Irom Chanu Sharmila who was on fast for more than six years demanding withdrawal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act 1958 from the state," said a RPF press release.
